What is Larynx Tumor?

The larynx also called as voice box that begins at the back of the throat and extends down, carrying air from the nose and mouth to the trachea and then into the lungs. A common larynx tumor is laryngeal papillomatosis. This condition is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV, Between 60 and 80 percent of all cases of laryngeal papillomatosis are found in children. These growths can lead to vocal cord damage and airway problems.

What is Larynx Tumor Symptom?

The symptom of larynx tumor depends on where in the larynx the tumor is located. Most people go hoarse from time to time, but if the hoarseness does not go away in two weeks, it should be checked. There are several symptoms of larynx tumor:

    • Hoarseness or a change in voice

If people have hoarseness for more than 3 weeks, it could be a sign of tumor of the larynx. This is one of the most common symptoms. One of the most common causes is acute laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx). This usually happens due to a cold, a chest infection or over use of the voice, such as shouting or screaming. Smoking can also cause hoarseness. This is due to irritation of the throat lining (mucous membranes). Other causes of hoarseness include acid reflux, post nasal drip, allergies, thyroid problems and injury.

    • Difficulty in swallowing

One of the symptoms of the larynx tumor is people feel that there is a crumb stuck in throat to being completely unable to swallow food. The people may have some pain or a burning sensation when swallowing food. A harmless narrowing of the oesophagus (called a stricture) can cause difficulty in swallowing. But it may be because a tumor or swelling is causing a blockage.

    • Weight Loss

It usually happens with more advanced tumor of the larynx and is very unlikely to be the only symptom. It may happen because people eating less due to pain or difficulty in swallowing.     • Cough and shortness of breath

Some people find that they are short of breath or have a cough that does not go away. Their breathing may become noisy.

Risk factor of Larynx Tumor

Different disease has different risk factor. Risk factor is possible risk that can lead to the disease such as tumor. Having a risk factor for tumor does not mean people definitely get it. Some people with risk factors never develop tumor while other people without any known risk factor can still develop it. There are several risk factor of larynx tumor:

    • Smoking

The longer a person smokes for and the more they smoke, the greater the risk of developing larynx tumor.

    • Alcohol

It will increase the risk of larynx tumor if drinking a lot of alcohol, especially spirit, over a long period of time. The risk is much higher for people who are both smokers and heavy drinker.

    • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

The virus that can cause genital warts can also develop into certain tumors. Mother may pass the virus on to their children when they are born.

    • Diet

Having a diet that’s high in animal fats and low in fresh fruit and vegetables may increase the risk of developing larynx tumor.

    • Gender

More men than women are diagnosed with tumor of the larynx.

    • Acid Reflux

Stomach acid can sometimes come back up the gullet (esophagus) and irritate or damage the gullet lining. This may also affect the larynx and increase the risk of tumor. It can occur when people have conditions such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GORD).
